SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION
How does Parkinson's and Dementia affect someone from a loved one's perspective through symbolic imagery, colored pencil, and graphite?
Identify the question(s) or inquiry that guided your sustained investigation.
Through colored pencil and graphite along with metaphor and symbolism, I investigate the effects of Parkison’s and dementia on my family from my personal perspective. With this theme in mind, I explore how my grandparent’s conditions have affected them, as well as our relationship, in order to express our journey. I’ve arranged my pieces to depict the progression of each of their illnesses, and connect their stories to how it has changed my feelings towards our relationship as I have gotten older and better understood the effects of their conditions.
Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your question(s) or inquiry.
Placing emphasis on the use of symbolism to depict my grandparent's conditions, my SI is centered on the development of their illnesses. I experiment with composition and color choice to express my perspective in SI 6 and 8; practice/revision is reflected through mind-maps. SI's 2-6 visually communicate my grandpa's mental deterioration from dementia, while SI's 9-13 depict my grandma's physical deterioration from Parkinson's. Both story lines transition from colored pencil to graphite to convey the escalation of their conditions. SI 15 considers the past, present, and future and emphasizes acceptance of our journey.
